The look on his face made my heart sink…

Updated: Jun 14

“It’s Ashley”, Tanner motioned to me to try and keep the ensuing kid chaos that was occurring behind me to a minimum while he answered the call.

“8 am on Monday morning”, I thought. “That’s early for her to ca– “Um, no thank you you can NOT put your lego men in the oatmeal, young man….. I’m sorry but you’ll have to find a different mountain for them to climb on.. Nope. I’m not going to ask you aga– “

Tanner motioned me to try and redirect the kids so he could hear.  “Yes, I understand Ashley. We really appreciate the call”.

He hung up and had that look on his face that always makes my heart sink a little bit.

“Melissa, we can’t do the variance.”

“WHAT?” My chest felt heavy.

We had just closed on the land 10 days before.

We had been working with the county for 3 months during our due diligence to ensure this wouldn’t happen.

“We have to try to rezone entirely. To highway business, which is essentially commercial zoning. And we need to meet them tomorrow at 9am to discuss it”.

I couldn’t believe it. I felt frustrated. I felt a little betrayed. I felt the flurry of inner activity that accompanies when I feel stressed and I have to get things done….

Things like: find a babysitter in less than 24 hours.

(Quick aside… if you’re a parent in Atlanta and you’re not using Sitter Tree , you’re missing out. They’ve saved us more than once at the last minute – like the above meeting– and are our go-to for the 3% of the time we actually plan ahead as well.)

We’ll pick up tomorrow’s post with our 9am arrival...

Warmly,

Melissa and Tanner
